Maybe Coraline was chosen because of where she lives (in the flat), her creativity as a child (great for a soul), and maybe she the other mom just feels that Coraline would be able to love her better is she was neglected as she was by her parents. I am not positive, but these are my best guesses, and whatever the other mother planned with Coraline backfired on her.
