I personally think that they are not true friends. I also think that Catherine just acts like she is Kristi's friend only because she really wanted to have a next door friend. It's some sort of guilt.
OH! Also, the guilt is that Catherine doesn't like Kristi all to much, but she really wants a next door friend to hang out with, so she feels guilty as a result.
