He thought that he would never become a bull fighter because inside he knew he was not brave at all. So when he heard that he was going to attend a bullfight he thought to himself that once he saw the bullfight he would know inside that bullfighting was too scary and that he would never be able to follow his dads footsteps. Also it was his first seen bullfight so he didn't know what to expect
I think that Manolo is afraid mainly of the fact that he is a coward. Because of this, he is afraid that going to a bullfight will give around the idea that he is interested in the sport of bullfighting, and he will be expected in a way to follow in his father's footsteps and become a bullfighter. When this day comes, he feels that he will not be ready, and he feels that he will either a) run away from the ring and be considered a cowawrd or b) try to fight the bull and get himself killed or seriously hurt, and both of these paths lead down to the fact that everyone will know that he is a coward. He will not want to show his face in public because of the humiliation, and he would either have to move or accept that everyone considers him a coward.
I think he is scared of how his father died, which is the same feeling as my Chinese uncle's friend. his father, Hu tong, was a huge officer in China then died in battle.
