Manolo's father

Manolo's father has been dead for years. Do you think he would have wanted Manolo to follow in his footsteps as a bullfighter?

Manolo

Just the thought of even attending a bullfight makes Manolo nervous. What do you think he is so afraid of?

Bullfighting?

What do you think of bullfighting in general? Can it still be considered an art?

Fear

Why do you think it's not okay for Manolo to feel afraid of anything? After all, he's just a child.

Expectations

At the beginning of the story, Manolo says that there are three things expected of him, but no one had to tell him what they were. Have you ever had that happen - where you knew you were supposed to do or not do a certain thing, or behave in a certain way, even though no one told you that? You just knew? It reminded me of college. I mean, when I was a kid I always knew I was supposed to go to college even though no one ever said it. It was just assumed that I would plan my life around preparing for a college education. Can you relate?

Bullfighting

Maybe people fight bulls because it gives them a sense that they are cheating death, so in some small way they have control over it. If the whole community wants to believe that bullfighters can cheat death, why would a man killed by a bull live on in legend, and not someone who never lost a fight?

Shadow of a Bull

"There have always been five things people fear...And of these, death has been feared the most." Do you think that's true? Why do these particular things make the list? Would you add anything?

The End of the Book

If you think there is a sequel, what do you think will happen? Will Travis escape close supervision? What if Josh and Scott go back to stealing purses?
