Because if Paul's parents had told him what had really happened, Paul would have hated his brother for the rest of his life, and he might have sought revenge, which would have only brought more violence, and nobody would want that. They were looking for the best interests of Paul and Eric when they considered not telling Paul the truth. What I don't see was why they didn't send Eric to a psychiatrist or someone so that they could see what had really happened to him and fix the problem. I still think that Paul deserved to know the truth, and Eric needed a punishment of severe magnitude, because I don't recall the parents even telling Eric off.
